Street and Roadway Evaluation Services

An important part of pavement design is understanding alternative construction materials and soil conditions. Pavement Engineering’s knowledge comes from a strong background in construction engineering and materials testing, and it uses this knowledge to provide the most cost-efficient maintenance remedies.

Testing and evaluating soils and asphalt concrete properties is an integral part of our engineering work. We use the Dynaflect pavement deflection test to evaluate asphalt concrete overlays for use over both existing asphalt concrete and PCC roadways. PEI combines that data with our knowledge of traffic loading (TIs), pavement fatigue characteristics, reflective cracking criteria, basement soil properties, and pavement fabric to design overlays using California Test 356 methodology.

Alternate rehabilitation approaches are a part of PEI’s environmental and cost-cutting approach. In lieu of overlaying, we can use rubberized asphalt chip seals, or we can repair trench cuts and cracking in a PCC street using various combinations of grinding and transitions to even out thick overlays.

In designing pavement removal (dig-outs), crack filling and slurry seal projects, PEI uses its knowledge of pavement fatigue patterns and construction methods to create cost-effective evaluations and accurate quantity data.

Finally, one of the most important factors affecting pavement design is planning for the unexpected, for construction uncertainties such as underground utilities and soil conditions. We carefully consider all potential conflicts and obtain all the necessary permits and plans to keep projects moving forward smoothly and within budget.
